Even though most people struggle to lose weight at some point in their lives, there is another issue with weight that affects many. Rapid weight gain is not only a physically distressing occurrence it can also be the sign of a serious illness. Whenever an otherwise healthy person gains a large amount of weight when they haven’t changed their eating or physical activities habits, it’s a sign of a problem.
There are different reasons why the body’s weight fluctuates and it’s not uncommon for a person’s weight to change slightly from day-to-day. When a person eats less, they are likely to drop a pound or two from one day to the next. The same is true if they overindulge over the holidays in turkey with all the trimmings and chocolates. Their weight will go up. However if there is a rapid weight gain when a person hasn’t consumed extra calories, visiting a doctor is called for.
One of the medical problems that can be the cause in the change of a person’s weight is a thyroid problem. If the thyroid is under active, a person can actually experience rapid weight gain. This can cause an incredible amount of stress. Unless the thyroid is regulated with medication, changing the diet and increasing exercise will do little to solve the problem. In this case it’s essential to see a doctor who will prescribe some simple blood tests to determine if the thyroid is indeed the problem. If it is, medication can be taken that will get it back to where it needs to be.
Another condition that can result in the number on the scale rising is a food allergy. Many people don’t realize that not all food allergies result in rashes or difficulty breathing. One symptom of a food allergy can be a rapid weight gain. In this case it’s a matter of determining what foods you recently introduced into your diet. You can remove one at a time to help pinpoint the problem and then avoid that food completely in the future.
Some prescription medications can also be the culprit. Many young women are aware of the fact that certain types of birth control pills can cause a rapid weight gain. If this does occur, the woman can inquire about a different brand or type of pill with her doctor. Some of the low dose pills that regulate a woman’s menstrual cycle aren’t as likely to cause a shift in body weight. In fact, some even cause women to lose weight.
Working closely with a doctor is really essential when it comes to finding the problem. If left untreated the weight gain may continue to a point where it becomes incredibly difficult to lose the excess weight. This not only poses a host of health problems it can also lead to depression and anxiety.
