Although I am now in a position in my life where I can afford new furniture, I still often prefer buying it second hand. This may seem strange to many people, as buying a new sofa is a luxury that many people appreciate when they are finally able to afford it. In my case, however, I have always had better luck with second hand furniture. Part of the reason is that I am thrifty. I never like to waste money – that is how I have gotten into the position of financial success that I am in today. I like to make my house look nice, and I won’t buy, for example, second hand wood furniture that is all banged up, or second hand Sofas that look faded and smell awful. If I buy furniture second hand and it is not in good shape, I will reupholster it and make it look better than ever before.

The biggest reason that I like second hand furniture, however, has to do with my dissatisfaction with the practices of many of the furniture manufacturers. I feel that most new furniture is simply not very good. Most of the sofas I will see in a furniture store are hideously ugly, and the ones that aren’t are seriously overpriced. When I buy second hand sofas, however, I can fix them up in any way that I see fit. I can reupholster them and get new cushions, coming up with a product that I think is better than the original.

Aside from that, fixing up second hand furniture gives me a great hobby. If I go to a second hand furniture sale, I can stock up on three or four pieces of furniture for the price I would usually pay for one. Then I will fix all of them up in my spare time, keep my favorite, and sell the rest off. Not only do I get hours of enjoyment from doing it, but I even make money on the side. Although it is far from a primary source of income, it does make a lucrative hobby and past time.

The only thing that I am wary of when I go second hand furniture shopping is allergens. You would be amazed if you knew how many used sofas are infected with some type of contagion or another. Either a pet has urinated on them, Mold has grown inside them, or some type of insect has taken over at one point or another. No matter what the reason, many of the second hand furnishings are not safe to take home, no matter how much you do to fix them up.
